a request from my mom…

I asked my mom what I should write a blog post about. She said. “I always like new tips and I like to know I am taking good care of my skin.” Well, when I think about how best to encourage someone to look after their skin, the inner nutritionist in me comes out. Because our skin is our largest organ, and other than our digestive system, it is our most vulnerable organ when it comes to toxins and chemicals, proper care of your skin definitely goes beyond the realm of makeup. Skincare and makeup are like the icing on the cake. I think one of the most important tips is that you need to make sure that every day you are staying hydrated, trying to manage stress in the most positive way, and getting good quality sleep most of the time. We are not perfect so our habits are the same. We sometimes drink too much coffee and not enough water, but the most important thing is that you are making a good effort to stay in balance. I have a relative who does not even drink water, she just drinks pop! I cringe when I think about that. You cannot expect to have healthy skin or even healthy anything if you do not properly hydrate yourself.

but first….water

Think of what you need to survive, really just survive. Food? Water? Air? Instagram? Naturally, I’m going to concentrate on water here. Water is of major importance to all living things; in some organisms, up to 90% of their body weight comes from water. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%. Each day humans must consume a certain amount of water to survive. Of course, this varies according to age and gender, and also by where someone lives. Generally, an adult male needs about 3 liters per day while an adult female needs about 2.2 liters per day. Some of this water is in food. Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of water and it is in the purest form. If you do not like the taste of water, try adding freshly squeezed lime or lemon!

Just like the other organs of our body, skin is also made of several cells. Skin cells like any other organ cells require water to function properly. Some of the benefits of water to the skin include:

1. Water is essential to maintain the optimum skin moisture and deliver essential nutrients to the skin cells. It replenishes the skin tissue and increases its elasticity. This helps delay the appearance of signs of ageing like wrinkles and fine lines.

2. Water is a perfect replacement for your expensive anti-ageing treatments. It keeps the skin well hydrated and glistening, thereby, enhancing the complexion. For soft and supple skin, drinking an adequate amount of water is more important than applying topical creams.

3. Drinking enough water combats skin disorders like psoriasis, wrinkles and eczema. It also increases the metabolic rate and improves digestive system to flush out toxins from the body. This in turn gives you a healthy and glowing skin.

4. A nice cold shower and a relaxing bath calm the nerves and reduces the stress related damage to the skin. Soak your entire body in cold water for 2 to 3 minutes to rejuvenate the skin. Long exposure of the skin to water can strip off the natural oils, so don’t stretch your bathing or shower duration.

5. Cold water bath eliminates redness of the skin and sets the skin for better makeup application. After opening the pores by washing them with warm water, you can seal them by splashing with cold water. Cold water tightens the pores and prevents them from getting clogged. It reduces the appearance of acne.

6. A cold water compress can also help to reduce under-eye inflammation. As the water evaporates from the skin, the surface becomes cooler. Splashing cold water on the eyes can also reduce eye puffiness. There are plenty of water-rich eye gels which you can use for a long-term solution.

7. In earlier times, people in Eastern Europe would visit bathhouses to detoxify and tighten the skin. The process involves a steam-room session, followed by a cool water plunge to tighten the skin. A facial sauna will have the same benefits. Try applying our GLACIAL CLAY CLEANSER as a mask first.

  • To do water therapy at home, soak a washcloth in steaming hot water, and then lay it on your face.
  • For the “plunge”, splash your face with cold water for around 15 times. This therapy invigorates and tightens the skin.

You can do this in a lot of different ways. There are fruit acids in our COCONUT CREAM MOISTURIZER which encourage natural exfoliation. Our GLACIAL CLAY CLEANSER is also wonderful at sloughing off dead skin cells. Even our BIO-FOUNDATION does this because it contains a blend of gently exfoliating clays. As we age, the cell turnover on our skin’s surface becomes a little sluggish. So when you are exfoliating on a regular basis, you encourage the speeding up of this process which brings back the glow to skin, even in colder, dry months. I am also very pro dermarolling and dermablading. These are two more aggressive forms of exfoliation and getting nutrients into the deeper dermal layers Because they are more aggressive, they only need to be done maximum once a week. The results are smoothing of scarring and brightening hyperpigmentation as well as toning skin. Apply our PURIFYING PRIMER serum immediately after to soothe and nourish skin.

layers of moisture

Think of it like layers of clothing when you are bundling up in the Fall + Winter. Once your skin is properly exfoliated, you want it to be able to breathe, while also protecting it. I recommend once you exfoliate, start with the purest form of moisture and the most anti-inflammatory, which is our RASPBERRY ELIXIR. Wait a couple minutes and then layer the RE application with your COCONUT CREAM MOISTURIZER. Then follow with your HAUT coverage. Always start with your cream foundation, then bio-foundation stippled all over face and neck lightly, then more cream foundation and brightener where needed. Lastly, take a quarter dime-size amount of COCONUT CREAM and tap gently over makeup to cheekbones, bridge of nose, browbones, just above upper lip, and chin, as well as anywhere you are experiencing dry patches. Do not forget your lips. exfoliating with your toothbrush lightly works well, and then apply a generous application of CLEAR or a favorite shade of BIO-COCOA BALM followed by LIP PLUMPING GLOSS or CUSTOM TRANSDERMAL NUTRITION LIP GLOSS. My glosses contain an amazing blend of superherbs that, when ingested, have a wide array of health benefits for the mind, body, and skin.

whole food supplements

I also recommend our WHOLE FOOD WELLNESS PATCHES to feed skin from within. In an ideal world we would have fertile soil which would grow vegetables and fruits which are packed full of nutrients. It is important that we eat our fruits and veggies but it is also important to keep in mind that when our soil is devoid of nutrients, so are the things which are grown in that soil. So that is why plant based supplements can be helpful. Find our supplements HERE. One of my favorites for skin is our TURMERIC patch. I also sometimes add turmeric and my favorite superherbs + supergreens blend to my water for extra nutrition and alkilinity. I hope this info helps Mom (and everyone else who needed it)!

protect your feather stroke brows

I love everything about the face and it’s expressions but I have always been especially infatuated with the brows. Brows have the ability to change the look of the entire face. It is almost magical. I believe it is because they frame the ‘windows to the soul’, the eyes. When I was younger my girlfriends would often catch me studying their brows as they were trying to share something with me and would say “Hey, my eyes are down here!” I understand why more and more women are turning to brow tattooing. It is wonderful to be able to create the perfect brow with makeup but it is a huge time saver if your brows are already done when you wake up. Some are blessed with beautifully lush brows that just need a touch of evening out here and there. Others, like myself, over did it with tweezing, and when you over tweeze, the hairs do not always grow back over time. Sickness can also cause brows to become thin, or sparse brows can be a reminder of having been sick.

I tried brow tattooing myself but the procedure was done almost two decades ago. Back then, it was done in a blocking or stippling pattern. I like the new method much better because it doesn’t look like a tattoo if done correctly. It looks like tiny brow hairs. Also, it is important to make sure that the technician you go to uses crushed earth pigments and not synthetic ink. The pigments should be vegan and 100% natural. Feather stroke is about creating the look of actual brow hairs with fine strokes. After getting my brows done twenty years ago, I moved to the west coast to go to makeup school. So when it was time for a brow touch up session a couple years later, I had to go to a different technician. Her style of brow was much different than the first time I had them done. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings but I honestly couldn’t wait for them to lighten up to the point of disappearing. I opted to grow out my natural brows as much as possible in hopes of covering up the tattoo. At the time, I was doing a lot of traveling to hot and balmy places. I was not applying sun protection to my brows so my brow tattoos actually disappeared at warp speed all on their own. So thankfully nature stepped in and naturally erased my brows tattoos for me.

If you have recently had your brows done with the new feather stroke method, this same thing could happen to you, even if you love your new brows. They are an investment so protecting them with natural SPF daily is of the utmost importance. I recommend apply our RASPBERRY ELIXIR as soon as you begin the healing process {and this goes for any type of tattoo-not just brows}. Your brows will be crisp and dark at first as the tattoo heals, as well as being a little sore and sensitive. You will go through a period of tingling and itchiness as the skin renews itself over the next week. I recommend applying one spray to the inside palm of our hand and then gently tapping the product into your brows with your index finger.

Our RASPBERRY ELIXIR  contains 35-50 spf but it also reduces inflammation in the skin. Nothing is added to the oil and nothing is taken out. Our oil is cold pressed and certified organic red raspberry seed oil from certified organic red raspberry seeds, which are grown locally without the use of synthetic chemicals.

Red Raspberry Seed Oil is a rich source of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids and antioxidants; including Vitamin E, polyphenols and ellagic acid. These natural antioxidants mop-up skin damaging free radicals that are caused by sunlight and other environmental stresses. Its anti-inflammatory action soothes irritated skin.

Due to Red Raspberry seed oil’s high antioxidant content, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect, and its natural UV protection, it is included as an ingredient in skin care products for anti-aging, brightening, moisturizing and balancing. The potential UVA and UVB protection afforded by raspberry seed oil is reportedly similar to titanium dioxide with an SPF protection factor of 28-50 (Oomah et al 2000)*. This nourishing and healing oil is also a main ingredient in our HAUT CARAMEL TAN. It treats irritated skin such as dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.

Things to keep in mind in your quest for the right technician from a makeup artist’s point of view:

-experience/before and after photos

-only 100% vegan and natural pigments are used

-choose a level of colour that will suit you without makeup

-do a rough sketch first and do not just go with the current brow trend shape

fall and winter supplement staples

Getting the proper amount of B vitamins is an essential part of your overall health, and Vitamin B12 is one that has particular benefits to multiple systems in your body. B12 is one that we can easily become deficient in – meat eaters and vegans alike. So it is important to supplement because:

Boosts Energy Levels- If you’ve been dragging lately it could be that you’re not getting enough Vitamin B12. Along with the other B Vitamins, B12 is known for it’s ability to keep you alert and feeling energized. That’s why some energy drinks include this in the ingredients.

Reduces Depression- Many vitamins including Vitamin D have been said to help with depression, and Vitamin B12 is no different. This is such an important reason to make sure that all of your vitamins are at optimal levels.

Helps Metabolize Proteins- One of the main features of Vitamin B12 is that it plays an active role in protein metabolism, which trickles over into several areas of the body. You might not notice these benefits when you are fine on your levels of B12, and you may not even be able to perceive a decline if you start to run low. For while these processes are important, they don’t show visible signs of depletion until after several years.

Protects Against Certain Cancers- Vitamin B12 helps specifically with certain cancers, both preventing them from occurring and helping to treat it if it’s already there. The cancers it has been associated with helping include prostate, lung, breast, and colon cancer. among others.

Protects Against Heart Disease- B12 has been shown to help the cardiovascular system in general, and a deficiency is often seen in those with heart problems. Since your heart is one of your most vital organs, it’s important to take good care of it, and while one specific vitamin won’t be a miracle answer, it can help in a comprehensive approach.

Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease- Vitamin B12 has been specifically credited for helping to treat and also prevent the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease. If you have a family history of Alzheimer’s or are worried about coming down with it in your later years, it’s a great idea to start eating more foods that contain ample amounts of this B vitamin. Try not to rely on a multivitamin or synthetic sources, an all natural strategy is best for the body and mind.

perfect coverage for hyperpigmentation

I recently took a trip home to visit my mom. Being that she uses only my makeup and skincare and I have been doing her makeup for years, I can’t help taking it personally when she says she thinks she is looking ‘old’. I decided it was probably time for a little summer refresher course on the order of her makeup application. This would also let me know if she was forgetting a step or needing a new shade. What I discovered was that she was missing two or three important steps and her order of application was mixed up (sorry to be the makeup police, Mom). When we did her makeup together it looked completely different, much more radiant and glowy. Her whole face was much brighter.

I thought to myself, if my own mother is getting confused, maybe a few of you could use a refresher also! This order of application is not the only way to apply your makeup but for those with ruddy complexions, hyperpigmentation, and a dullness to their skin, I have found this to work the best for me and on my clients over the past twenty years.

Order of application is very important. First allow me to list it clearly and simply. You will see I mention the neck. It is the first place we age so it needs to be protected just as much as the face. You may want to take a screenshot so you can review it from your phone before going about your morning beauty routine:

  1. Raspberry Elixir + Coconut Cream face and neck
  2. BB Cream using A FRESH START BRUSH face and neck
  3. Dewy HDD to spot cover hyperpigmentation using SMOOTH THINGS OVER BRUSH
  4. Bio-Foundation lightly pressed all over using PLUSH KABUKI BRUSH face and neck
  5. Concealing HDD around eyes, nose, and mouth with NEED A LIFT BRUSH
  6. Brightener around eyes, blending into upper and lower base of lashes and inner corners of eyes

I like to first apply a little Almond Cocoa BB Cream anywhere I want extra contouring but this is not a necessity.

  1. Loose Tint to cheekbones, bridge of nose, and forehead, blending in to full perimeter of face WORK IT OUT BRUSH
  2. Aloe Cream Tints/ Bio-Cocoa Balms on apple of cheeks {fullest part} & eyelids, and brows, and lips MULTIPLE BRUSHES
  3. Transdermal lip gloss on lips and a little rolled onto upper cheekbones for a sheen, blend lightly

When I went to makeup school for film, I learned how to cover bruising, scarring, and tattoos. So as I worked to create each product in this line, I took that knowledge and applied it to hyperpigmentation or sunspots, scarring, and redness to create maximum coverage but also the most natural effect. I have had clients come to me with severe scarring after being in a horrific car accident, third degree facial burns from a kitchen accident, the common ‘pregnancy mask’, and also cystic acne sufferers. The all-to-familiar request I would hear over and over is, “I just want to feel like myself again.” Whether you have extreme rosacea or just a few sunspots you would like to make disappear, the above steps will do just that and each step and the order of application is equally important. I have created each product with a specific purpose from the others. If you need any other makeup tips, just email iartists@hautcosmetics.ca!

Haut Tools – Vegan Makeup Brushes Online

Vegan Makeup Brushes

I always try to apply my makeup without my brushes once in awhile to remind myself of the importance of using the right tools with each product. I also want to relay the most straight-forward application instructions to help people do their makeup efficiently in the morning. “All of our brushes are vegan” and should be washed once or twice a week like you would wash your hair. Use a natural shampoo (SLS-free), rinse out until the water runs clear, squeeze water out carefully and lay flat to dry.

A FRESH START BRUSH: this brush is used to apply our bb cream formula. Picking up the slightest bit of bb cream on the tip of the  brush is the perfect amount. Blend into skin all over face and neck.

PLUSH KABUKI BRUSH: use this brush to apply our Bio-mineral foundation. Pick up product evenly on brush and press into skin in a diagonally upward motion. Repeat anywhere you feel you need extra coverage.

SMOOTH THINGS OVER BRUSH: use this brush for application of the Coconut Cream Moisturizer and Purifying Primer. You can also apply our Brighteners & Aloe Cream Tints to cheeks and eyes with this brush.

WORK IT OUT BRUSH: blend Loose Tints to perfection. This brush is perfect for contouring with Illuminating and Henna Loose Tints.

BRUSH WITH GREATNESS: you can apply Brighteners and Aloe Cream Tints to eyelids and around the eyes.

NEED A LIFT BRUSH: highlight under brows with appropriate Brightener and around lips like an inside-out lip liner. This will also make lips appear fuller and lasts throughout the day.

THE EYES HAVE IT BRUSH: works great to smudge Loose Tints around the eyes and to create smoky eyes. It is also the perfect size to create a dramatic brow.

DEFINING MOMENT BRUSH: great for more defined brows and it has a brush to brush color through brows and hold in place.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE BRUSH: this brush pairs well with Marble and Vintage Loose Tints to create a smooth, ‘liquid liner’ or to smudge liner into an evenly dark smoky eye. It can also be used to apply Aloe Cream Tints to lips.

how to create a 100% safe, body contouring tan

Before I became a makeup artist I pursued a career in the fitness industry. I was never really interested in being involved in sports growing up but I realized lifting weights agreed with me as there was no competition involved. Learning to discipline my body and work it out daily felt like the most natural thing to do, and with so many benefits. Training my muscles felt meditative to me. It was also very rewarding to be able to help individuals achieve their own fitness goals and to be in a positive, fun atmosphere every day.

As my muscles became more sculpted and defined, having a tan was like the icing on the cake as it accentuated all the contours and helped me see the results of my hard work. I was constantly searching for a tan in a bottle that did not leave me with streaks and an odd odor. I became a self-tanning junkie! Yet, I was never pleased with the ingredients I read on the bottle. And that all-to-familiar smell was not attractive! Some self tanning creams contained ‘parfums’ to mask the smell but eventually it would overpower any kind of added scent. Every formula also seemed to often contain alcohol, which dried out my skin. FInding a plant based self tanning creaming was completely out of the question a decade ago.

I decided if I ever had the chance and if it was even possible, I would create my own self tanning cream that had only nourishing, toxin-free ingredients and still offered no compromise on a beautiful, healthy-looking tan. Upon reading more about DHA (dihydroxyacetone), the active colouring agent in self tanning creams and spray tans, I realized I did not want to risk the long term effects of this ingredient just to have a tanned look. Over the years it has been reported that DHA can wreak havoc on your DNA, especially in spray form. Being that everything we put on our skin can be absorbed into our blood stream, the risks to me greatly outweighed any beauty benefits.

Yet, I missed having that tan in a bottle at my fingertips. Although it is now known that too much sun can accelerate aging, a tan to me is like the ultimate body bb cream with SPF coverage. It diffuses hyperpigmentation, cellulite, scarring, stretch marks, and creates a smooth, leaner look. So once I started creating my makeup line, I wasted no time in creating my own plant based, toxin-free self-tanning cream. I have tweaked it a little over the years with some newly discovered food grade ingredients but most importantly I am proud to say it is 100% DHA-FREE.

The active tanning agent is a natural sugar from a berry and the result is a more golden, less red/orange tone than the DHA version creates. Without the DHA, the tan takes a little longer to develop so I recommend applying it a day before you are wanting your tan to show up. Exfoliating before your first application will create more intense colour and applying a hydrating body oil or moisturizer daily will extend the life of your tan. To build on the colour you can apply two days back to back or wait a day to see if it is dark enough and then apply a second application on the third day.

Our HAUT CARAMEL TAN has no odor and no added synthetic scent, only skin-loving ingredients that are safe enough to ingest. ALSO! We have just launched our +EXTRA COLOUR option if you need a little more colour than the ORIGINAL provides. Our unique formula is safe enough to use on the face and is also safe for teens and pregnant mamas who would love a little colour. If you have an extra fair skin tone I recommend mixing a little moisturizer with our HAUT CARAMEL TAN as even the ORIGINAL has a generous dose of colour.

caramel tan review

Emmily Banks, an eco-beauty advocate, celebrity makeup artist, and founder of Depths of Beauty recently reviewed our CARAMEL TAN along with a few others! Read what she had to say about it HERE. I recommend storing your CARAMEL TAN in the fridge as the thicker consistency will keep you from applying too much and also keep all the antioxidants more potent. You will find even the 1oz size will go much further. I like to mix a little with my Coconut Cream to my upper forehead, cheek bones, and bridge of nose to create a sun kissed look. What I learned from my experience in the fitness industry is that you can do the same contouring on your body {click photo for reference link}:

healthy color application for fair skin

Click on poster to read application instructions.

I know that sometimes women with lighter complexions can be afraid that even a little colour is too much. I think if the makeup itself is healthy you should not need as much coverage but the colour we add to our cheeks, lips, and eyes, can illuminate a healthy look. We can get away with less colour in our twenties but as we get older we lose a little colour in our lips and cheeks. Bringing back this colour does not take any kind of surgical procedure. Exercise helps bring back that healthy flush. Also eating well, staying hydrated, adequate rest, and making sure your skin can breathe all play a part.

As a makeup artist I have found that the less ‘perfect’ the colour looks on your lips and cheeks, the better. Think of it as finger painting for adults. Using creams and the warmth of fingertips gives natural pigments more of glow-from-within look on the skin and the technique is effortless and quite fun. So save the brushes for details and your powders with this makeup look. Colour placement does not have to be perfect, just pretty and well blended.

where to start on the path to fresh, luxury vegan beauty

I am still amazed when I look around at how far makeup has come since I started my line. I remember working for a line fresh out of makeup school that evoked this simplistic, natural feel in its marketing and packaging. However, when I dug deeper I was confused as to why I could not pronounce the ingredients. I was kind of looking around, thinking, ummm – is it just me who is feeling a little betrayed here? Even after I started my line, I was doubtful anyone out there cared about the same things as me, or got excited about the same things as me when it came to beauty. I would start to explain about the potency of the raw ingredients I had lovingly hand blended into each unique formula. Often a client would cut me off and say, “I don’t really care what is in it dear, what I want to know is if it works.” I have learned over the years that everyone is on their own path and as excited as I am to make someone feel naturally beautiful, I need to be patient and let them come to me when they are ready. Usually the point where someone was fully on board and believed in what I was doing was when they bumped into a friend, also a client of mine, whose skin glowed and looked youthful and vibrant. They wanted to know what they were doing differently. When makeup has truly beautiful, clean ingredients and zero crud, it speaks for itself.

We get so many emails from new clients who are wanting to clean up their makeup bag and are not sure where to begin. Most start out by saying they are having a hard time figuring out what shades would suit them best online. Take a deep breath and let us handle that part! It’s free and we have been doing this for twelve years for people all over the world without ever seeing them in person. We have been able to match all their unique skin tones with the perfect colour and coverage for their lifestyle and they have been our clients for years. We have a pretty good feeling we can do it for you too.

The more background you can give us on what you have been struggling with regarding your makeup routine, or if you do not even have one, the better we are able to help. Once we match you up with a colour palette, you can start with samples and see what textures work the best for your skin type. If you decide you would like to customize the colours a little more before you order the full size, you will have the ability to do that too. Make sure that when taking photos, your source of lighting is 100% natural and that you take a photo in two or three different areas, close to a window. Light can reflect off the skin in different ways depending on the climate and the time of day.

If you are using products underneath our makeup products that still contain Dimethicone, Mineral Oil, and other ingredients that are not compatible with your body, you will not get the results you could be getting out of our products. It is important that your skincare routine is as simple and clean as your makeup routine. If you are not sure if a product is clean, feel free to ask, or browse the new apps online which will give it to you straight! Like I mentioned above, if there are ingredients you cannot pronounce, chances are the product is not 100% natural.

If you want to achieve better skin, what you put into your body is just as important as what you put on it. Make sure you stay well hydrated through the day. Drinking teas like Organic Dandelion Root will keep your liver cleansed and this will make skin glow! Add some fresh aloe to your smoothie in the morning to make it extra- alkalizing! Try to choose all different colours of vegetables and fruits to get the most variety of potent antioxidants. I am also a huge fan of fermented juices as they give the body what it needs to create its own vitamins. The added benefit is that it does not only improve your skin’s health, it will improve your energy and even your mood.

I honestly feel lost without my brushes, like I am all thumbs. Makeup brushes allow you to create a polished look in a minimal amount of time. If you invest in good quality vegan brushes and look after them, they will last you a lifetime. I put a lot of thought into the making of every brush. Our luxury vegan brushes allow you to create so many different types of coverage, colors, and texture. We want you to have fun with your makeup and the way it is applied. We are just an email away to help with any questions or concerns you may have and hope this helps take the guess work out of it so that you have more time to PLAY!

mature makeup part II

In continuation of my first post a few weeks ago about mature makeup, I want to explain the final steps of being able to create a natural look yourself. Even though I call this mature makeup, it works for all ages. The brightening is really important! If you did not read PART I, I highly recommend it before reading this post.

So if you have ever been told you look like you are mad or sad when you are neither, this look can be caused by the darkening or sallowness around the eyes, nose, and especially the mouth area. Brightening doesn’t just erase dark circles, it actually puts a smile on your face.

You can blend your Concealing HDD with your Yellow/Deep Yellow Brightener or just use it on its own. I have roughly sketched the area of placement but blending this application out is really important. The best brush to use is our A FRESH START BRUSH. Hyperpigmentation spots can be custom covered with our NEED A LIFT BRUSH. If you have a longer face, you may want to add a little extra brightening to the outer jaw line also. A touch of concealer just outside of the lip line creates fuller lips! Being that we get different amounts of sleep from day to day, it is helpful to take a step back from the mirror and observe if you need to add a little more or less coverage anywhere. Many clients have written me over the years expressing that after wearing our coverage every day, over time less makeup is needed. I think this has a lot to do with the skin being able to breathe through the makeup. It returns to its natural coloring and is able to heal itself.

Once you have applied brightening and coverage, it is important to commit a good slice of your makeup application time to creating strong, lush brows. They are the frame of the painting, so to speak! If you need a brow lesson I recommend going to a professional artist and taking photos of your brows after so you can review as you practice by yourself. Every pair of brows is unique. Your tool is SO important. Our DEFINING MOMENT BRUSH is a must-have. Make sure your brow tint shade is not too dark or your brows will look thin and harsh. A lot of my clients match Martini Aloe Cream Tint to a T. If you are a dark brunette, Vintage Aloe Cream Tint is more suitable. If your hair is black, a light application of Marble will work best. Strong brows really make a statement. I am personally obsessed with them. It is the fastest way to create a clean, polished look.

If you are noticing that you look a little washed out and think that maybe your coverage is too light, try this step first and see if it helps before you change your coverage shade. Using our WORK IT OUT BRUSH, apply a light application of our ALOE LOOSE TINT {ILLUMINATING if you are light to medium or HENNA if you are medium to dark in skin tone} just below the cheek bones, a touch on both sides of nose, and on the upper forehead. Blend out well towards your hairline. If you accidentally go too heavy and look like you jumped in a mud puddle, just dilute the color with a little BIO-FOUNDATION.

Two common mistakes I find with my mature clients is that they do not wear enough colour on their cheeks AND also that they wear their blush too low. This can actually pull the face down. If you are properly placing it on your cheek it will give a huge lift to the face and a flushed cheek is healthy looking. When you smile you can see the fullest part of your cheeks better. You want to keep the colour right on the fullest part and above. Apply with our WORK IT OUT BRUSH or with fingers and apply like you are tracing a cinnamon bun, starting in the center. Again, blend out to create the most natural look.

Whatever ALOE CREAM TINT works for your brows quite often seems to work as a wash of color on eyes and as a natural lip liner. I always apply BRIGHTENER on eyelids first so that the color over it is brighter and smooth. BRUSH WITH GREATNESS is best for applying your eye shadow and THE EYES HAVE IT or THE ICING ON THE CAKE BRUSH works for liner. Using our ICING ON THE CAKE BRUSH lightly line lips with MARTINI or VINTAGE ALOE CREAM TINT. Apply your favorite BIO-COCOA BALM or ALOE CREAM TINT over top. Last but not least, apply a touch of COCONUT CREAM to upper cheekbones. This creates a beautiful glow that smooths fine lines and lasts all day. Have fun playing! how makeup can age you

In makeup school I learned how to do a lot of different types of makeup. ‘Pretty’ makeup was actually a really small part of the course. The makeup portion I learned the most from was the aging makeup for film and TV. What stayed with me the most was how it only took a few steps to really age the face.. I decided that THAT would be how I would focus on makeup application. I would do the exact opposite of those steps when teaching others how to apply their makeup. I will be going over the steps in my next post, MATURE MAKEUP PART II. Application is an important part but to me it is 80% the ingredients that allow me to create glowing looks on all ages. There are a few ingredients I have worked with in the past that I was constantly told were safe and would make skin look ‘more youthful’. Now I am often asked why I have chosen to leave these popular ingredients out of our formulas. I will explain to you first my feedback on an ingredient as a makeup artist and then from a green chemist perspective.

ARTIST: This became the natural alternative to talc. I saw this on the ingredient list in all the first mineral makeup brands that started cropping up two decades ago. It is what sort of confused me at first about mineral makeup. It was supposed to be ‘pure’ but I would notice it made my own combination skin look like an oil slick. It was also impossible to create a ‘matte look’ for editorial and film makeup. Bismuth also has a strong pink undertone. Not only does it clog pores, it can permanently stretch pore walls, as well as causing acne and redness. If you notice a line requires a mineral ‘veil’ over the application of foundation, this is a sign the foundation contains Bismuth.

GREEN CHEMIST: This is very similar in chemical composition to ARSENIC. The biggest concern about using Bismuth Oxychloride is that it frequently causes irritation and sensitization such as redness, itching, rashes and inflammation. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) lists it as a potential irritant to humans when come into contact with the skin and/or eyes. Because of its molecular crystalline shape, experience itching from this ingredient, particularly when they sweat.

ARTIST: Although I did a lot of bridal makeup in my younger days, my calling and my passion has always been mature makeup. Women of all ages should feel beautiful.. However, I would become so frustrated with the presence of this ingredient in the products i used because it enhanced fine lines to the max. Now there are more MICA-FREE lines like mine but it is one of the reasons I actually started to mixing my own makeup. I noticed Mica could make someone look decades beyond their years in just a few quick swipes (see photo below). All too often a bare-faced, 40+ client would hop in my makeup chair and confess that she just kind of ‘gave up on makeup’ because it made her look older. Because it is very inexpensive it is used as a filler and has no benefit to skin.

GREEN CHEMIST: This mineral breaks into the thinnest of flakes which are then wet ground finer and finer but they remain flakes. And flakes have edges. So they shimmer. But what do fine edges do, as well? They cut. This causes inflammation and irritation on the surface of the skin, much like with the ingredient Bismuth Oxychloride. When Mica dust is breathed in, what its tiny flakes do is scar the lungs. No studies yet show the same dangers for cosmetics, but Cosmetics Database website lists mica as moderately hazardous.

ARTIST: Titanium Dioxide gives mineral makeup sunscreen and coverage and is used in most sunscreens, paints, plastics, and even food. This is the an ingredient I was not sure I would ever figure out how to do without because when I looked around, almost every other line listed it in the ingredients. Surprisingly, after a lot of experimentation, I was able to create a formula for each product that performed just as well, if not better, without it. I have found that TD is similar to Talc and Bismuth Oxychloride. What I have noticed about our Titanium Dioxide Free formula is that it is not as drying and ultimately ‘aging’. Makeup is lighter and bends more easily.

GREEN CHEMIST: Research suggests that TD dust, if inhaled, is a group 2B cancerogen = a possible cancerogen. French scientists proved that TD nanoparticles could be just as toxic as Asbestos (a close relative of TD), accumulating in the lungs and causing lung irritation, inflammation and, ultimately, cancer. Instead of repeating a previous post HERE is a link to the lowdown on Titanium Dioxide.
